Taking the step into independent life has both hurdles and hopes to offer. Young adults today have an almost infinite variety of opportunities for self-realisation, improving the world – or on a smaller scale: opportunities to participate in social life. It is common to imagine that the city would benefit from this concert, that film screening, this speaker and that party series. The idea is not new. It is worth looking at what already exists: what have other students done and created during this time? Structures often exist that are waiting to be discovered and used. Kellerperle emerged from these dreams and has since established itself in the city.
What is Kellerperle? Kellerperle is a cultural centre in Würzburg, located in the basement of the Studentenhaus. It is run by the Studentische Kulturinitiative Würzburg e.V. The cultural initiative is a non-commercial association. Kellerperle is supported by the Studentenwerk, which provides the premises and manages the beverage service. The establishment is operated and used predominantly by students. Non-students can also get actively involved in the association or support it as a sponsoring member.
The HistoryThe idea of establishing a student cultural centre in Würzburg arose during the student protests in 2009. It proved to be a fortunate circumstance that the managing director of the Studentenwerk, Herr Ullrich, was also enthusiastic about the idea and made a room in the Studentenhaus available. Over the following eighteen months, the plans were implemented, and in November 2011 the doors could be opened. Since then, over two hundred events have taken place behind these doors each year.
The ProgrammeKellerperle is a cultural initiative that organises cultural, artistic and informative events. A variety of evening offerings have sweetened many an hour here. Concerts, readings, lectures, film screenings, flea markets, workshops, vernissages and parties take place regularly. Every Monday, Perlenkino invites you to watch a film on the big screen – with free admission. Surprise films are shown according to a known monthly theme. The artists who grace our Perle are certainly worth seeing. In recent years, well-known musicians such as AnnenMayKantereit, Mine and Milky Chance, scene heroes such as Moop Mama, The Underground Youth and Waving the Guns, as well as many local artists have visited the Perle. Authors such as Heinz Strunk, Stefanie Sargnagel and Manuel Möglich have read here, and at regular intervals, Lower Franconian rappers rhyme in the in-house Cypher Beatz&Lyrics. Jam sessions, improv theatre and wine tastings have warmed the cellar. Student university groups have space here for their activities. In addition to this abundance, new concepts are also being tested. The WG-Speed-Dating made it into ZEIT and Spiegel. Which content is implemented also depends on who gets involved at Kellerperle. The simplest recipe for getting your desired event into the city remains to participate and organise it yourself. Years of experience and a good network give newcomers a solid foundation to realise their own ideas.
