Introduction to the SSR

SSR is the abbreviation for the Speaker Council / Student Government (SSR) of Universität Würzburg. The SSR is an important part of student representation with the aim of advocating for all our concerns at the university. This year's SSR consists of seven students, who are introduced below:
Stella Gaus and Chris Rettner: Senate
As student senators directly elected by you students, we are also part of the Speaker Council / Student Government (SSR). Since senate work takes up a lot of time, we do not take on our own departments within the SSR. In the senate, for example, changes to degree programmes are decided or positions are taken on appointment proposals for new professors. Through our position in the senate, we are also members of the University Council, in which, amongst other things, the university leadership is elected and changes to the basic regulations are decided. Beyond our senate work, we of course still participate in the weekly SSR meetings and contribute as much as we can.
Ingo Heide: Chair
Allow me: Heide, Ingo by name, student of law and Chair of the wonderful SSR. Being Chair means above all organising the framework so that the body itself functions and all members are equipped with the means to become active themselves. On the one hand, this involves primarily the preparation and chairing of the weekly meetings. On the other hand, I also understand the task to mean that I am fundamentally supportive of anything that could concern someone in the SSR, and thus tasks that no one takes on automatically fall into my responsibility. This can mean working through a mountain of position and legislative texts or answering your enquiries to the SSR personally. In any case, there is always something to do in one way or another, but with the fantastic support from Henry (see below) and the SSR as a team, no task has ever been too big.
Henry Mörtl: Deputy Chair
My name is Henry Mörtl and I study philosophy and biology. As deputy chair, I primarily look after the day-to-day running of the SSR, support Ingo (see above) where I can, take care of emails, submissions, deadlines, appointments etc. In addition, I keep an eye on the SSR's finances, check expenditures, present the budget and sign invoices. Furthermore, I try to attend most of the student politics meetings that are open to me and bring the SSR's views to the table.
Pia May: Events
My name is Pia May and I study museology and EEVK. The Events Department primarily deals with organising the freshers' fair, parties and much more. Unfortunately, this is not possible at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic, so we are trying to create online offerings. The last project was the freshers' fair already mentioned, which you can find on our website and which presents various leisure activities and organisations of all kinds.
Sebastian Treier: Public Relations
My name is Sebastian Treier, I am 22 years old and am currently studying in my 7th semester for a teaching degree in English/American Studies and Geography. I have been active in the Faculty Student Representation of the School of Philosophy since my first semester and have been the faculty speaker since WS19/20. In WS2020 I was elected to the SSR, where I took on the Public Relations and Advertising Department. My main tasks here are writing the Montagsmail and managing the SSR's social media channels.
Lea Kugelmann: Technology
My name is Lea and I held the Technology Department this academic year. In this department, I take care of everything related to hardware and software in our Studentenhaus, look after the website and create, for example, posters for events. Of course, the day-to-day running of the SSR must not be forgotten. I am studying in my 5th semester of geography and am also active in the Faculty Student Representation of the School of Philosophy.
Fatim Dao: Social Affairs, Sustainability & Equality
I am Fatim Dao, I study teaching for secondary school and have been a member of the SSR since August. I originally come from Côte d'Ivoire and came to Germany to study. As an international student, I know exactly what overwhelms us here as newcomers. My goal is therefore to make study time as pleasant as possible for all students, whether German or international students. I look after the "Social Affairs, Sustainability and Equality" Department. In my department, I am first of all responsible for supporting students, as all other departments are too, and standing by them. I also help students with everything related to social life.
Abdu Bilican: External Relations
My name is Abdu Bilican and I am studying in my third master's semester in functional materials and have been in the SSR at JMU Würzburg since WS19/20. The department in the SSR for which I am responsible deals with issues around students' external relations. This includes, in addition to representation at the LAK, networking with students from FHWS, the music academy and other universities in the Franconia region. In addition to networking, it is also my task to represent student interests outside the universities. Currently this is happening with the extension of the semester ticket theatre, where we have negotiated with the student services and the Mainfranken theatre for fair prices and conditions.
