Grey days in a typically grey winter. But we have something for you; as luminous orange-red as sunrays on an August day on the Main. Würzburg's newest winter discovery, Hot Aperol. Some might roll their eyes now, pull a face, and quite rightly so, but as students we simply love the fruity-sweet drink that not only refreshes in summer, but also always smells a little bit like the next Italian holiday. So, why not bring this feeling into winter?

We set out and tested the Hot Aperol offerings at Würzburg bars. That said, there is of course a long list of great cafés and bars that deserve to appear in this post just as much, but first we come to our top 3.

Starting with another absolute cliché and classic; the Uni Café

Located between the city centre and Sanderstraße, the Uni Café not only offers the perfect location, but has also had Hot Aperol for a few months now. The glass comes and goes just as quickly. Unfortunately, we're not particularly convinced by the size of the glass. But it's definitely tasty, even if the Aperol is a bit too sweet for our taste. What particularly impressed us, however, was the price. A glass is available here for just €3.90. Therefore, our beloved Uni Café takes third place this time, "only" in third place.

Star rating:

  • Taste: 4/5
  • Price: 5/5 (€3.90)
  • Appearance: 4/5
  • Overall rating: 4.3/5

On we go with number 2; the new "Haltestelle Barviertel"

Newly opened, it impresses us above all with its cosy interior design and sweet staff. Since we were a bit ahead of our time – aka too early in the evening – we had the back room to ourselves. But let's get to the point. The Hot Aperol is served in a jug, could be a bit warmer, but still absolutely acceptable. With a somewhat fruitier flavour, but also a higher price (€6.90), the bar "Haltestelle Barviertel" therefore receives the proud number 2 from us.

Star rating:

  • Flavour: 4.5/5
  • Price: 4/5 (€6.90)
  • Appearance: 4.5/5
  • Overall rating: 4.3/5

Last but not least, our favourite; Café Koer

The small café on Semmelstraße impressed us particularly this time. Alongside the friendly staff and the relaxed music – which also happily promotes local artists – the Hot Aperol was the fruitiest we've tried. Not only a beautiful glass, but the Aperol also offered the perfect temperature. The price is also in the mid-range at €5.90. For this overall performance, we therefore award it first place.

Star rating:

  • Taste: 5/5
  • Price: 4.5/5 (€5.90)
  • Appearance: 5/5
  • Overall rating: 4.8/5

But if exams in January start to take over again, or money gets tight, we have one last tip for you; a recipe for your own Hot Aperol.

For this you need:

  • 250ml dry white wine
  • 100ml Aperol
  • 200ml apple juice
  • 1 orange

Heat the white wine with the Aperol and apple juice in a saucepan (but do not bring to the boil). Wash the orange and slice it. Then add half of the sliced orange segments to the saucepan and let it infuse for a few minutes. Finally, distribute the second half of the orange slices into the glasses, add the Hot Aperol and you're done.

But since you should also leave the house from time to time during exam season, get out there, enjoy our favourites and all the other great cafés and bars in Würzburg. But more importantly, get through January with the thought that we'll soon all be lying by the Main again and can enjoy the proper sunshine. Your Sprachrohr Team
