Dear first-year students,
your degree programme is confirmed, your matriculation has gone through and you have
decided on the best student city in Germany: Welcome warmly
to Würzburg! Motivated and a bit nervous, you are now fighting your way through your first
days at university. At the beginning everything is completely new and unfamiliar, which is why here are some
survival tips so that you get through your semester as a first-year student well and perhaps avoid some embarrassing
situations.

1
Attend the introductory events. There you will receive the most important information
about your degree programme, the lecture catalogue, get help putting together your timetable and learn to distinguish terms like "sb@home" and "WueCampus2". The orientation days organised by your student subject initiative are important for getting to know your first fellow students!
2
Pay attention to deadlines. At the beginning everything is new and from the BAföG proposal to setting up the internet there are a thousand things you have to remember. But one thing is important: NEVER miss the deadline for exam registration (usually before you seriously start dealing with exams) and the deadline for re-registration!

3
Distinguish between tutors and academic staff. Many tutors are only a few semesters ahead of you, the relationship is totally relaxed and they are usually addressed informally. Academic staff have completed their studies or are doing a doctorate, so you are not automatically on informal terms with them.
4
Distinguish between c.t. and s.t. This is about the "academic quarter". If a
time is given as "10 o'clock c.t." the event only starts at 10:15, whereas with
s.t. it starts at 10 o'clock sharp.
5
On the bus: Look forward to the bus journeys, where you will get to know your fellow students much better if you travel during peak times! Very important: there are light barriers at the doors, if you stand too close to the door it won't close, you have been exposed as a first-year student and the bus driver will probably make a "nice" announcement.
6
In the lecture hall: Eating and drinking is normal in every lecture hall, despite prohibition signs.
The lecture halls are cramped, you rarely have enough space, so look after your pencil case. It often happens that the contents of an entire pencil case end up scattered across the floor of the lecture hall. Don't embarrass yourself: at the end of a lecture you don't clap, but exclusively knock.
7
In the library there are special rules. Bags and jackets are absolutely taboo in the library. There
are lockers and it is advisable to buy a small padlock to
be able to lock your locker. You can get transparent library bags from the
library staff if you ask nicely, and you are allowed to take them into the library.
In most rooms you don't talk, there are separate rooms where you are allowed to work together.
Eating is forbidden in the library by the way.
8
Be tidy. It is not cool to scatter cigarette butts all over campus, leave coffee cups lying around or clog the toilet with a toilet roll.
9
In the canteen: With the canteen app you can check beforehand what there is to
eat. You pay with your student ID card, which you have to top up beforehand.
You cannot pay with cash at every till!
10
Don't give up. The first semester can really get on your nerves. It can
be difficult or make you doubt yourself, but over time you will find your way better. Get to know your studies better first, don't judge too quickly and don't miss getting to know student life properly, which also exists alongside lectures and exams.
