Dear readers,
Fresh from the editorial office, we welcome you to our new issue of Sprachrohr. This summer's overarching theme is "Freedom". With this, we have certainly found a topic that not only unites people's minds but also divides them. Summer is now just around the corner, even if it has taken its time arriving, and with it comes that familiar feeling of anticipation for the summer holidays. Sitting by the Main drinking lemonade or a beer, perhaps even by the sea, and simply unwinding. At least insofar as that is possible with new coronavirus variants and really only during the lecture-free period. Because whilst some of us can go on holiday and have already finished the semester, others of us are not yet so free. Coursework or even final theses are still being written and one or another exam is still on the horizon, even if it doesn't take place until October. And perhaps an internship after that, which might actually be fun, but of course still doesn't feel like a holiday.
So for some, things simply continue. Nevertheless, it feels like an ending, albeit a small one. And with an ending usually comes the freedom to begin something new. How will things continue after the summer? How do things stand more generally with our freedoms? Which freedoms are particularly important to us?
According to the dictionary, freedom means that a person has the possibility to make their own decisions without feeling the pressure or coercion of external circumstances or other people. And is that not precisely what freedom means—independence? Also with regard to time? No, because no one can choose which country and which era they are born into. What we do with that, however, remains up to us. There are infinitely many opinions and discussions about freedom and what it ultimately means. Our editorial team have tried to find an answer to this question. In doing so, we have approached the most varied facets and sub-areas of this abstract construct and presented many different perspectives. Be curious and read for yourselves. For who doesn't dream of simply being free? Let yourselves be inspired and encouraged to philosophise with your friends at your next evening gathering.
