Collective agreement for student staff (TVStud)
What is TVStud actually?
TVStud is an initiative of the trade unions GEW (Gewerkschaft Erziehung und Wissenschaft) and ver.di (Vereinte Dienstleistungsgewerkschaft). The aim is to negotiate a nationwide collective agreement for all Student Staff (analogous to the collective agreement of the states "TV-L").
The university is only bound by the statutory minimum wage. For this reason, almost all Student Staff at Uni Würzburg receive only the minimum wage. Flexible working hours (for example to prepare better for exams) are only rarely offered.
The demands of the TVStud campaign for a collective agreement:
- Fairer and comparable wages
- Guaranteed, improved working conditions (for example with regard to working time regulations, sick leave, etc.)

It works!
Berlin demonstrates that a collective agreement for Student Staff is achievable – and it works: Berlin has had a collective agreement for Student Staff since the 1980s. In 2018, over 1,000 students in Berlin organised themselves to jointly secure an improved collective agreement – successfully: in case of illness, pay continues for up to 10 weeks, holiday entitlement rose to 30 days per year, and hourly wages are also regulated by collective agreement.
