Ecology and Sustainability

You want Uni Würzburg to take climate and biodiversity seriously, and you're happy to get stuck in yourself? Then you're in the right place. We garden in the CampusGarten, bring more nature to campus and put sustainability into student politics.

The Department of Ecology and Sustainability is one of the Departments of the SSR. All students can get involved.

CampusGarten

The CampusGarten is located directly at the stuv hub at Campus Hubland Nord. Since 2022 we have been developing it across approximately 3,000 m² according to the principles of Permaculture.

Ridges with fruit and nut trees provide protection from wind and offer shade; their fruits belong to everyone. In between are around 60 beds that students cultivate themselves. The only taboo is synthetic pesticides and fertiliser.

At the edge there are dry, sandy areas with a sandarium, a lizard shelter and ponds. Do you want to help with gardening? Then write to us.

In the competition "New Green for Würzburg" 2025, the CampusGarten won first prize in the Community Projects category.

Projects and formats

CampusBank

On the CampusBank benches at Hubland North you can study or relax. Around them we create small biotopes, with signs explaining them.

Green courtyard at Wittelsbacher Platz

Seating, raised beds and natural areas in the courtyard of the university building: we are committed to this on behalf of the StuPa.

Review

On 10 May 2026, we organised the Citizen Science Day with the LBV university group. Lectures, a bird excursion, guided tours and workshops showed how everyone can participate in research on biodiversity. A report was published by the Living Campus Initiative.

Ahead of the municipal election in Würzburg in 2026, we interviewed parties about their election manifestos.

In 2022, students called for a climate-neutral university by 2030 in an open letter. You can find the letter and background information on the page Sustainability.

We campaigned for a committee that advances sustainability at the university. In 2014, the university established the Commission for Sustainable Development. Who represents stuv today on the Sustainability Commission can be found under Commissions.

From 2016 to 2020, we organised a lecture series on sustainability, most recently with the Commission and the Natural Sciences Association. From winter semester 2020/21 onwards, it became part of the GSiK certificate. You can find lectures on this topic in the GSiK programme.

From 2014, the CampusGarten was located at the Students' House on Emil-Hilb-Weg. It had to make way for a university construction project; the current CampusGarten has replaced it.

In 2018, we designed a participatory garden at the State Garden Show together with the city gardeners and the adult education centre. In 2012, 2020 and 2021, we co-organised the Eco-Social University Days at Uni Würzburg.

The Department was awarded official project status three times as part of a UN decade, most recently in 2018 for biological diversity. Additionally, we received, amongst other things, the WVV Environmental Prize in 2024 and a funding prize from the vbw Foundation in 2025.
