Senate and University Council
The Senate and University Council are the two highest decision-making bodies at Uni Würzburg. The Senate regulates the day-to-day academic business around studies, teaching and research. The University Council determines the long-term direction of the university and elects the university leadership. Two student Senate members sit on both bodies; they are your most important voice at the highest level of the university.
In short
Your Senate members
You elect the two student senate members directly every year at the university election. They are also members of ex officio the SSR and the StuPa. Term of office 2025/26.
Explained in more detail
The Senate deals with everything directly related to studies, teaching and research. It passes the university's statutes, in particular study and examination regulations, and issues statements on the appointment of professors. For you, this means: how your examination regulations are structured, which degree programmes exist and who will teach you in future are decided here. Students are represented in the 11-member Senate by two people – the two student senators, whom you elect in the university elections. In addition, there are six representatives of academic staff, one representative each of scientific and artistic staff as well as other employees, and the university's equal opportunities officer. The university management and the Medical Director participate in the meetings as advisors.
The University Council looks at the bigger picture: leadership, direction and development of the university. It elects the President (and can also remove them from office), passes the basic regulations and their amendments, and decides on the university's development plan. It comprises elected Senate members as well as ten external personalities from science, culture, business and professional practice. For you, this means: who leads the university and the direction it develops in the long term is determined here.
